After Barbara's death in 1862, William married Sarah "Sallie" Bentley on February 24, 1870 in Randolph Co, Missouri. They had no children.

William was a lover of fine horses and always rode. A couple of days before his death, he had been to Huntsville on school business and on the way out of town, his horse jumped, throwing William. His head hit a large rock. He was taken to his home where he lived a few days but never regained consciousness. After William's death in 1884, Sallie moved to Renick, Missouri where she lived until her death.
