Facts and Events
William Cox was born in 1862 in the parish of St Mellion, Cornwall, the fourth of six children (but the only son) of a gamekeeper named John Cox and his wife Sarah Fox. When William was about six years old, the family left St Mellion and moved to the parish of St Ewe, where they lived at a hamlet called Pengrugla, adjoining the Heligan estate, which is presumably where John Cox worked. William followed his father's footsteps, also becoming a gamekeeper.
After his father's death in 1891, William moved back in with his widowed mother. The 1901 census finds him a 38 year old bachelor living with his mother at Reskivers in the parish of Veryan, about five miles west of Pengrugla. Neither of them were working, describing themselves as 'living on own means', quite possibly not needing to work given that John Cox's estate had been valued at £1151 11s 11d at his death in 1891 - a relatively substantial amount.
William has yet to be researched after the 1901 census.
