William Cox was the eldest son of Thomas and Elizabeth Cox. He grew up with his parents in his native village of Barnack in Northamptonshire. After his father's death in 1884, William and his brothers supported their widowed mother. As an adult, William worked as an agricultural labourer and carpenter. He does not appear to have married and was still living in Barnack at the time of the 1911 census.
