William Cox was baptised on 20th October 1816 at Norton in Hertfordshire, son of Susan Cox, formerly Moles, and her husband George Cox, a labourer. George and Susan had married five months before William's baptism.

When William was 13, his father George died, aged 34. Some time prior to 1835, William's maternal grandfather Thomas Moles came to live with the family at Norton.

William was married on 28th January 1837 at Norton to Sarah Parsons from Baldock. They have yet to be researched after their marriage.
