  • Pages 123-26. 10-11 July 1742. Benjamin Borden of Orange County to William Cowdon of same. Lease and release ; for £6.0.2 current money. 200 acres 28 pole.. part of 92,100 acres by pattin (patent) 6 Nov. 1739... corner to Wm. Smith land... (signed) Benja. Borden. Wit: James Eakins, Samll. Dunlap, Robt. Dunlap. 26 Aug. 1742. Acknowledged by Benjamin Borden, Gent. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 8, Dorman, pg. 8].

Will Transcript:

In the name of God, Amen
January the 17th of the Y 1748/9
I William Cowden in the County of Augusta being sick and Weak in body but in perfect Mind and Memory thanks begiven to God therefore calling to Mind the Mortality of my body and that it is appointed for all Men once to die Do Make and ordain this my last Will and Testament that is to say principally and first of all I recommend my soul unto the hands of God that Gave it and as for my body I recommend it to the Earth to be buried in a Christian Manner at discretion of Executors nothing doubting but at the General resurrection to receive it again by the Mighty power of God that gave it and as for such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this Life I give and dispose in the following manner
First I order my Just and Lawful debts to be paid
Imprimis I give to my Dearly beloved sons James and William the plantation which I possess at 16 years of age to be equally divided only I order my wife Jane her Maintenance out of it as long as she contains single or unmarried
I order that the Moveables to be divided equally in three shares first to my beloved Wife Jean and likewise to my sons James & William and the Division to be made at the discretion of my Exs
I order my Exs to see my Children schooled and I do hereby disannul and disallow and revoke all and every other former will and testament and Legacy and Executors by me in any ways before time named and confirm this and no other to be my last will and Testament As witness hereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written. Signed & Sealed by the said William Cowden as his last Will and testament in the Presents of us:

At a Court continued and held for August County the 16th day of February 1748
The Last will and Testament of Wm Cowden deced was presented into Court by James Aikins & John Moore the Exs therein named who made oath thereto according to Law and being proved by the oaths of Samuel and Alexander Moore two of the witnesses thereto who also made oath that they saw Walter Aikins sign the same as an Evidence the said will is admitted to record and on the Motion of the said Exs and their performing what is ___ in such Cases Certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in Due form

  • Vol. 1 - FEBRUARY 27, 1750. - (531) David Evans summoned for not providing for his children in a decent and Christianlike manner. (531) Jennet Cowdon--same. (Note: Jennet Cowden is most likely the wife of William Cowden, who had died in 1748).
  • Page 280.--28th May. 1751. Borden, etc., to Mathew Edmiston, 238 acres, tract surveyed for John Allen and for Wm. Smith; corner Wm. Cowdon.
  • Page 650.--20th June, 1764. Mathew ( ) Edmiston and Margret to Samuel Patterson, £55, 238 acres in Borden's tract, and conveyed to Mathew, 28th May, 1751; corner tract surveyed for William Smith; corner Wm. Cowden's land. Teste: Pat. Martin, James McCleerey, Jno. Mophet.
