SMITH -- GARRETT and Allied Families of Overton, Fentress and Pickett Counties, Tennessee, by Oma Smith, page 206: "In 1832 at the age of seventy-one he applied for pension in Jonesville, Lee County, Virginia. The Bible sheet referred to above shows his birth date as 5 January 1761, the same date he gave in his application for pension on 15 October 1832. William had enlisted in January 1779 under Colonel Evan Shelby. He told of marching against the Chickamauga Indian towns "destroying the corn in the neighborhood, the Indians having fled and after destroying the towns" going on to a French town on the Kaskaskia River. He later joined the regiment commanded by Colonel George Rogers Clarke and went on to Vincennes and from there to the Iron banks on the Mississippi River six miles below the mouth of the Ohio River. There he was discharged 10 July 1780 and "returned from there through the wilderness to his residence in Washington County, Virginia." His pension was approved and received until his death 24 September 1851."

William (X) Carmack (Seal) Signed in presence of us George Rogers Green V. Walland Thomas J. Pridemore Richard Crabtree ______________________________

At a Court begun and held for Lee County (Virginia) the 15th day of December 1851: The last will and testament of William Carmack, deceased, was proved by the oaths of Thomas J. Pridemore and Richard Crabtree witnesses thereto and is ordered to be recorded and on the motion of Levi Carmack the executor therein named who made oath thereto and together with William T. Martin his security, entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $500 conditioned as the law directs, certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate of the said will in due form. According to a deed made in June 1846, William Carmack was living in Lee County on land he had purchased from the John Ball heirs, and it seems unlikely that he moved back to Washington County, however, it is claimed that he died September 24, 1851 in Washington County, near Bristol. Records have not been found giving the date of Mary (Ball) Carmack's death."
