REFN: 144 all of the informaion on the Burney's from Robert H. Sr. to Leo. is from the Hill Country Preservation Society inc. Bicentennial Edition "Kerr County Texas 1856-1976" it includes the pix of the Burney Pioneer Group and the Trio of pioneer Sisters. Dewitt as William was known by was the 1st Sheriff of Kerr County Texas, elected in 1856 and served for 2 years, he was 28 years old. He had no courthouse, jail,or any equipment that would go with such a job today. While a child he lived in McMairy Co.Tennn. and at 21 the left for the Southwest. on his way he was helping harvest hay near San Antonio in 1850 when he was bitten by a rattlesnake, and suffered from the bite for 13 months, it left him handicapped for the rest of his life. In 1852 he went farther west to the Medina river country and joined others in making cypress shingles during this time he adventured into what is today Kerr Co. Tx . He and his traveling companions, brother Robert, and friends; Sidney and Adolphus Rees; and Pat and Tom Sanner, named the following creeks (whos names have remained today, Polly's Peak Bluff, Pipe, Doe, and Privilege, in Bandera Co, and Silver and Goat in Kerr Co. He was enlisted in the Texas Rangers early into the Civil War. and helped to guard the frontier from indian raids. The cypress lumber he and his brothers cut was used to aid in the building of the old fort Camp Verde TX. W. D. C. Burney m. Martha Tatum in 1866 and they lived on Verde Creek until 1871 when they moved to Center Point.
