"He married 3rd about 1778 Mary -- widow of Christopher Smith of Patterson's Creek , by whom he had Mary and Richard."

    Buffington, WIlliam

William Buffington, son of Thomas and Ruth, ca. 1710 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, married (1) Alice Rupp (2) Magdalena Ferree (3) Mary, widow of Christopher Smith, and had children by all three wives. One of William's children by Magdalena Ferree was Joel, from whom some of the Louisa County Buffingtons descend. The Ferree family was of Huguenot descent and can be traced for hundreds of years with a Dubois connection. William moved to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and then to Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia), where he died in 1784. Joel Buffington became the wealthy Buffington, building on the Savage grant land that had been obtained by William. Joel was the purchaser (disputed) of the Island of Duvol, which was renamed Buffington Island after him. This island is in the Ohio RIver and has been under the jurisdiction of several counties in Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio. It is presently an Ohio state park.

By 1760 William purchased land in Hampshire County, Virginia, (now West Virginia.) and about 1770 purchased a large interest in the Savage Land Grant in the western part of the state that was a key to his family's later wealth. Probably he settled property on the children of his first marriage before he moved to Virginia since they are not mentioned in his Will.

Will of William Buffington dated 3-13-1784, codicil 3-25-1784, probate. 8-10-1784,

names five sons: Thomas, William, Joel, David, and Jonathan; two daughters, Ruth Collins & Susannah Sullivan. Richard and Mary are named in separate items of The Will. Pounds 20 each to orphans of Christopher Smith.

Executors wife Mary, sons Thomas & William. Witnesses: Samuel Dew, Joseph Hall, Christopher Andrews."
