In 1534, William Baillieof Dunain was Sheriff of Inverness and Constable of the Castle of Inverness. He Married a daughter of Ross of Balnagown.

About 1540, Lord Alexander Baillie (of Balliol) Lord of Dunraget (fs. David Baillie, Lord of Lamington, the 2nd son of Sir William Baillie x Marion) is born. He became an officer in the English Army. He purchased the lands of Innishargie, county Down. He altered the spelling of his surname. He had a son : Alexander Bailie, (°1587 +1682, leaving issue) Lord of Innishargie and Ringdufferin. From: Shirley Samurray480@@aol.com

In 1548, Lord David Baillie, of Dunain, Shuglie and Glen-Urquhart was Constable of the Castle of Inverness. He married Margaret, daughter of Rose, of Kilravock. He died in 1558.

In 1585, Lord Christopher Bayley x Elizabeth Berie (Barry, Berry). Christopher was born about 1560 in York Shire (probably West Riding portion), England, and died in 1620.

In 1587, the list of unruly clans in the West Marches, proves that the name Bell was common on the Scottish Border for centuries

In 1590, Lord Godfrey Bailey (fs.. Christopher Bayley x Elisabeth) is born. Spouse unknown. Lived in Bradford, West Riding York Shire. Children : Ann, John, James (of Rowley, MA), Richard (of Rowley), Mary, William and Martha. James and Richard Bailey of Rowley were the founders of two of the four major Bailey family groups in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. The others being "John Bayley of Salisbury", MA and Thomas Bailey of Weymouth, MA. Richard was part owner of what is believed to be the first cloth mill, in New England.

The connection of Christopher Bayley and Godfrey Bailey to James and Richard Bailey of Rowley is not proven but only surmised given that they have been proved to be brothers and that person from Yorkshire settled Rowley. Some serious Genealogy researchers including Mr Chris Bailey and a Richard of Rowley researcher who holds a Masters Degree in Genealogy, feel that both James and Richard would have named sons after their father and grandfather. Richard had only one child, Joseph before his death and the sons of James of Rowley were John, Jonathan and James Jr. It was customary to name a first-born son after the paternal grandfather, the first-born daughter after the maternal grand mother.

About 1654, a colony of French Protestant refugees settled at Thorney Abbey in Cambridgeshire. Among them were four persons, Jacques, Abraham, Philippe and Jean de Bailleul who were gentlemen with money.

Jacques and Abraham appear in the Thorney register of baptism as sponsors in February, 1656. Philippe de Bailleul appears in the following month and Jean, a few years later. No further trace is to be found of Jacques.

The de Bailleul soon obtained the name of Bayley, though the original name was always retained in the register. The origin of these Bailleul was Flanders because :

“The disappearance of the de Bailleul of Eecke under the remarkable circumstances which we have narrated and the appearance at Thorney of the Huguenot family of that name, taken in connection with the fact that no other family of the name can be found which the refugees could have belonged, and with other facts, which are stated elsewhere (the Bayleys of Willow Hall) justify the conclusion that the Bailleuls of Eecke (Flanders) survive in the family of Bayley.” (The Bailleuls of Flanders by F. Bayley. Anno 1881).

In 1658, Lord William Baillie, of Lamington (x Margaret, fa.of Robert, Lord Maxwell) fought on the side of Mary, Queen of Scots, against the Regent Murray.

In 1690, John Bailey (fs. Godfrey Bailey) (°1642) died while returning from the "expedition to Canada", an attack on the French by British-American forces during the French and Indian War. He married Mary Mighill (fa Deacon Thomas x2 Mary Parrot), in Rowley.

William Bayly of England m. Mary Thomas Baily, b. 1567, m. Ann and then Jane Daniel Baylie of England, b. 1601, m. Mary Joel Baily b. 1658, from Eng. to PA m. Ann Short Thomas Baily m. Sarah Bentley Mary Baily m. 1756 Caleb Hayes Abigail Hayes m. James Millison, Jr. All I used to know about the Baileys was that Mary Bailey, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Bailey, had married Caleb Hayes and was the mother of Abigail Hayes Millison.

On the PAGenWeb for Chester County, I discovered a marvelous link to the genealogy of this old family created by Pamela J. Robinson. Click here

Also visit Pamela's Home Page, because you never know how many ancestors you may have in common. Then, drop her a line to tell her how much you enjoyed the site.

From Pamela's work I discovered that William Bayly was born about 1540 in Parish of Bromham, Wiltshire, England, and died November 22, 1575 in Parish of Bromham, Wiltshire, England. He married Mary (possibly Fisher).

Their child, Thomas Baily, was born 1567 in Parish of Bromham, Wiltshire, England, and died in Parish of Bromham, Wiltshire, England. He married (1) Ann before 1601 in parish of Bromham, Wiltshire, England. He married (2) Jane 1605 in Bromham, Wiltshire, England.

Daniel Baylie, son of Thomas, was born 1601 in Chitto, Parish of Bromham, Wiltshire England, and died April 1674 in Chitto, Parish of Bromham, Wiltshire, England. He married Mary.

Their son, Joel Baily, was born 1658 in Parish of Bromham, Wiltshire, England, and died 1732 in Chester County, PA. He was the immigrant who married Ann Short on February 11, 1686/87 in PA, daughter of Miriam Ingram.

Thomas Baily, son of Joel, was born about 1700 in Aston, Chester, PA, and died about 1764 in Newlin Twp., Chester, PA. He married Sarah Bentley about 1734 in Chester Co., PA, daughter of John Bentley and Mary Miles.

It was their daughter, Mary Baily, who was born in Chester Co., PA. She married Caleb Hayes November 20, 1756 in Swede's Church, Wilmington, DE, son of Joseph Hayes and Jean Woodward. Their children were Isaac, Anne, Caleb, Abigail, Ellis and Ruth.

Abigail Hayes, d/o Caleb Hayes and Jean Woodward, married James Millison, Jr., s/o James Millison and Grace Woodward (1/2 sister to Jean Woodward). They moved to Washington County, Pennsylvania, and are responsible for almost all the Millisons who lived in that county and later in Belmont County, Ohio, by the next generation. Their daughter, Abigail Millison, married John Henry Carver, Jr.

Clan Baillie

Traditionally Baillie is believed to be a corruption of the once illustrious name of Balliol which was changed on account of the unpopularity of the two Scottish Balliol kings. Most authorities agree, however, that Baillie is derived from the office of bailie or bailiff, being either an officer administering an estate or the equivalent of a magistrate in a burgh. The earliest record of this name in Scotland occurs in 1311-12 when one William de Bailli appears as a jury member at an inquest concerning forfeited lands; he is also recorded as one of the witnesses to a charter by John de Graham, Lord of Abercorn in 1315. There are a number of prominent families of this name, most notably those of Lamington, Polkemmet, Jerviswood, Dochfour and Dunain. The William de Bailli mentioned above is believed to be "Baillie of Hoperig", ancestor of the Baillies of Lamington, who was granted the lands of Lamington by David II, with whom he fought at the Battle of Durham. The title, Baillie of Lamington, having often been held by females, finally fell vacant in 1880. The Baillies of Dochfour and Dunain in the Inverness area are descended from a son of the laird of Lamington who fought at the Battle of Brechin in 1452. The Earl of Huntly awarded his gallantry with the Dochfour lands. In 1894 Col. James Baillie, member of Parliament for Inverness, married Nellie Lisa Bass and brought the title of Baron Burton into the Dochfour family.

The following contributed by Dorothy Elliott Haver-Pate

Baileys in Texas: Henry and Sarah ____ came to Texas in 1834 from TN. One of their sons was Howard W. Bailey who was in the Battle of San Jacinto and Mexican Wars. One reason he was in the Mexican War is that the United States could not rally the Mexicans after Texas became a part of the US. Earlier soldiers were called out to help fight. Also his brothers were in other campaigns such as the Confederacy. Howard may have been a forebearer of the Texas Rangers but I haven't been able to check that out yet.

The settlement of new England was made by persons who had suffered persecution on account of their religious belief and practice and here sought a peaceful asylum for the enjoyment of their faith . About thirty years later another sect arose in England under the leadership of George Fox. Acknowledging the divine inspiration of the holy scriptures, they at the same time clamed as chief guide of conduct the immediate influence of the Holy Sprit. They advocated a FREE gospel ministry and REFUSED to pay tithes or take oaths or engage in war. They styled themselves "The society of friends." but were commonly called Quakers - a title they are still generally known. Fidelity to their principles and a steadfast refusal to comply with the fashionable usage's of the time which were adverse to their conscientious convictions made them subjects of Violent persecution. Numbers of them were cast into prisons, Their property confiscated and many died under their sufferings. William Penn, The son of an admiral in the Royal Navy , was arrested for preaching to a number of people in Gracechurch street, London, and with his Companion William Mead, was tried at the court known as the Old Bailey, in 1670, the jurors , with a sense of Human rights refused to give a verdict against them. Although condemned to be locked up without meat, drink , fire or tobacco for 2 days. the jury was fined forty marks each for repeated demands of the court to convict the prisoners the jurors who's names need to be remembered and looked at by us are. Edward Bushel, Thomas Veere, Charles Milsone, William Plumstead, Henry Michel, Gregory Walklet , Henry Henley, John Hammond, William Leaver, John Brightman ,James Damask, And John Bailey..

Among those who were Victims of persecution there were several of the following name of Baily ,Bailey, Bayly, or Bayley.* as will appear from the following "sufferings of the Quakers."

the variations of the spellings of the name is attributed no doubt to the illiteracy or carelessness of the parties by whom the records were made. (I would also note that spelling was not standardized until 1900.) There is good reason to suppose that most, if not all, these records refer to the same family - most of whom appear to have been the earliest members of the society of friends . in England.

In the time of the sessions, in London, 1662 , Charles Bailey and 2 other Friends came to a house not far off to hear how matters went with their persecuted friends. the court being informed where they were sent for them , tendered them the oath and committed them to prison. William Bayley and five others, standing quietly in the street, near the Bull and Mouth Meeting-place, were taken by soldiers and carried to Richard Brown, who caused their hats to be pulled off with much violence and wrath, and smote William Bayley with his fist several times, and when William's wife reproved him for abusing her husband he struck her on the mouth and threw her to the floor; and though William cautioned him to beware what he did he neverless struck her and threw her down again, and at length ordered his man and other rude fellows to carry William to Newgate.

the several references to William Baily, as given by Besse, possibly relate to the same person, born, in the Isle of Wight. He had been a teacher among the Baptist a Pool in Dorsetshire, where he was convinced by the ministry of George Fox in 1655, and entered into Society Called Quakers, amongst whom he became a zealous preacher and traveled abroad in exercise of his ministerial gift. For some time he followed a seafaring life and his death occurred in 1675 on a voyage from Barbadoes . he married Mary Fisher, born within 2 miles of York who had visited New England in company with Anne Austin, in 1656. they were the first of the sect to arrive and were no immediately cast into prison, their books burned by the hangman. and after a few weeks they were sent away on a vessel to Barbadoes. Marry Fisher, the next year, made a remark Journey to visit the Sultan Mahomet IV , then encamped with his army near Adrianople, and by whome she was received with respect. she married again. 1678, John cross and removed to Carolina; died at Charleston in 1698. There was an understanding by which Fernwick was to have 1 tenth of the providence, and in 1675 he led a colony of friends who formed as a settlement at Salem. Here at last was an asylum where this persecuted people might enjoy freedom in religious worship. Some disagreement between Fenwick and Billinge , it was happily settled through the interposition of William Penn, Gawen Lawrie and Nicholas Lucas for the benefit of his creditors. These divided the province into one hundred shares or "Poprieties," for which they found purchasers among Friends in Yorkshire and London. In 1677 another settlement was made at Burlington and the success of the colony was assured.

William Penn thus became interested in American colonization and conceived the Idea of becoming a Provincial proprietary . th
