COL. WILLIAM BASSETT, (4—7), of Eltham, New Kent Co., Va., the eldest surviving son of Col. William and Joanna (Burwell) Bassett, of Eltham, b. July 8, 1709; served as a Burgess, 1743-44; was a staunch and liberal supporter of the Established Church, and Vestryman of St. Peter's Parish; m. Jan. 29, 1729, Elizabeth Churchill, b. 1710; d. April 16, 1779; dau. of Hon. William and Elizabeth (Armistead) Churchill, of Middlesex Co., Va. His wid. m. (second) July 10, 1752, William Dawson, President of William and Mary College.
