Facts and Events
1874 - Birth Registration: William Walter, son of Richard NEWMAN, shoemaker, and Mary NEWMAN formerly JACOBS. Informant was Owen RYAN, sergeant of police, Georges Bay. 1911 - Newspaper report in the Daily Telegraph, Launceston, on 25 February: DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. BRANXHOLM, Friday. — During this afternoon a destructive fire took place at the residence of Mr Walter Newman. Mrs Newman having just returned home about 4 o'clock in the afternoon, and lighting the fire, left the house for a few minutes. She was absent about ten minutes, and was just returning, when on looking up she saw the house enveloped in flames. About fifty or more men quickly arrived on the scene, but the fire had such a hold that it was impossible to save anything at all, so the men worked very hard carrying water, etc., to save the adjoining buildings, which was all they could do. Great sympathy is felt throughout the district for them, they having lost everything except just what they stood up in, and it is understood that nothing was insured. 1914-49 - Recorded in Australian Electoral Roll as Walter NEWMAN, Branxholm, Tasmania, miner [with wife]. 1954 - Recorded in Australian Electoral Roll as Walter NEWMAN, Branxholm, Tasmania, miner. 1954 - Death Notice in The Mercury, Hobart, on 16 June: NEWMAN. - On June 14, 1954, at Hobart, Walter James, beloved husband of the late Maud Elizabeth Newman, late of Branxholm, and loved father of Vince, Lilly (deceased), and Daisy (deceased), aged 80 years. 1954 - Funeral Notice in The Mercury, Hobart, on 16 June: NEWMAN. - Friends of the late Mr. Walter J.
