WELCH - Vella Mae Russ, age 74, of Welch, died Monday, October 8, 2007, at Princeton Community Hospital.

Born November 7, 1932, in Capels, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Ruby Lee Goins Miller.

She was a resident of Welch since 1975, formerly of Capels. She was a member of Mountain Top Baptist Church on Premier Mountain. She formerly served as a cook for the McDowell County Board of Education.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard D. Russ; two brothers, Charles Rutherford and Robert Miller; two sons, Jerry Russ and David Russ.

Survivors include two sons, H. Michael Russ of Welch, J. Steve Russ, Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Linda Jones of Knoxville, Md., Tammy Fields and husband Mike of Welch; daughter-in-law, Katrina Russ of Nortonville, Ky.; 11 grandchildren, Michelle Rushbrook, Kimberly Woods, M. Paul Russ, Gregory Russ, Valerie Egelson, Stevi Russ, Donna Holbert, Sabrina Sweeny, Heather Jones, Jennifer Fields, Sunni Russ; eight great-grandchildren, Brittany Rushbrook, Courtney Rushbrook, Amber Russ, Dalton Russ, Desiray Sweeney, Nicholas Sweeney, Sara Holbert and Nicholas Holbert.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 11, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the Mountain Top Baptist Church on Premier Mountain near Welch with Rev. Ralph Steele, officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell.

Friends may call Wednesday evening at the church, after 6 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Harless Collins, John Blevins, Jimmy Russ, Dewey Russ, George Russ Jr., and Bruce Hughes.

Fanning Funeral Home of Welch is serving the Russ family.

2012-Vella, 7, is in the 1940 census; according to the obituary her parents were Frank and Ruby Lee (Goins) Miller. She had two brothers Charles Rutherford and Robert Miller. In the 1940 census Vella is living with Henry D Christian and his wife, Nina, 21. There is also a sister to Vella, Betty Jo Rutherford, 5. I found a 1929 WV marriage record for Carr Rutherford and Ruby Goins. I found a 1930 census for the Harrison P Goins family with daughter, Nina Goins, age 14. In the same household is Conner Rutherford, 21 and his wife, Ruby, 18.

Still need to find the two brothers; need a marriage record for Frank Miller and Ruby.
