!This baby and his mother, Anne Elizabeth Gibson Ballard, died during
childbirth. Placenta filled birth canal and baby unable to be born. They
are buried in the same casket in Cottonwood, Utah. (Notes of Fern Russell
Willis)
!Dan Willis (Anne's 2nd Great-grandson), with 2 of his sons, Connor and Morgan,
located the grave on 15 Aug 1994 in Holladay Memorial Park, 4900 Memory Lane
(2000 East 4800-5042 South), Salt Lake City, Utah. Listed in cemetery records
as "Annie Ballard" with no next-of-kin. Plot is 4th East, 1st North #1.
Cemetery records indicate that a headstone once existed, but a handwritten
notation to the records state that the headstone became "unreadable". At the
time of Dan's visit, the headstone was missing and the grave unmarked.
Cemetery officials confirm that Holladay Memorial Park "absorbed" the old
Cottonwood Cemetery. Anne's mother (Anne Elizabeth Newman Gibson), uncle
(William Hughes Newman) and aunt (Jane Ann Allen Newman) are buried close by
in well-marked graves in the same cemetery. No note of Anne's baby boy being
buried with her.
!"Big Cottonwood" and "Cottonwood" are now known as the Holladay area of Salt
Lake City, Utah.
!In November 1994, through the contributions of many of Anne Elizabeth Gibson
Ballard's descendants, a new headstone was installed at her grave. It reads:
ANNE E. G. BALLARD
1858 - 1891
and her infant son
DIED IN CHILDBIRTH
He died at his birth and was buried with his mother who died giving him birth.
They are buried at Holiday Memorial Park.
