Koniz, Town (1990 pop. 37,309), Bern canton, W central Switzerland. It is a suburb of Bern. The Romanesque-Gothic Church founded in the 10th century by Rudolph II of Burgundy, has noteworthy 14th-century stained glass and frescoes. The Family of Ulrich Speicher came from Koniz,Canton Bern, Switzerland, according to "Both Sides of the Ocean" by J. Virgil Miller, Masthof Press, p. 213. Came to America on ship "Charming Nancy", arriving October 8, 1737 from London, with wife Mary. Name on roster spelled Spigher. Family records of Carol Boyer. WFT v. 2,3,8. May have come from Switzerland.(Broderbund Family Archive #354, Ed. 1, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, Date of import : October 8,1998 08 October 1737 arrived in Philadelphia non ship Charming Nancy. Ship was called Charming Polly in Switzerland. Ulrich Speicher arrived at Philadelphia on October 8, 1737, aboard the ship "Charming Nancy" to the best of our knowledge, he was very poor and possibly became a bound servant to pay for his passage and for the passage of his family. In 1755, eighteen years after his arrival in Pennsylvania, Ulrich received a grant of land from the Proprietors. In the records of the Land Office at Harrisburg is the following entry: "By virtue of a warrant dated the 8th day of June, 1744, to Ulrich Speiker, the above described tract of land situated in Bearn Township, Berks County, containing 193 1/2 acres of land with allowance of 6 per cent. Signed John Scull." Latter this same tract was patented to Emmanuel Schlappich on August 29, 1870. References
