Tristram Coffin (or Coffyn) (c. 1609 – 2 October 1681) was an immigrant to Massachusetts from England. In 1659 he led a group of investors that bought Nantucket from Thomas Mayhew for thirty pounds and two beaver hats. He became a prominent citizen of the settlement. A great number of his descendants became prominent in North American society, and many were involved in the later history of Nantucket during and after its heyday as a whaling center. Almost all notable Americans with roots in Nantucket are descended from Tristram Coffin, although Benjamin Franklin was an exception.

May 1661, aged 77), two sis. Eunice, wh. m. William Butler, and Mary, wh. m. Alexander Adams of Boston; sat down, first, at Salisbury, soon rem. to Haverhill, where his youngest ch. d. had Mary, b. 20 Feb. 1645; and John, again, 13 Dec. 1647; rem. a. 1618, to Newbury, where Stephen was b. 10 May 1652; again rem. to Salisbury, there was a county magistr. and finally rem. 1660, to Nantucket with his aged mo. w. and four ch. and d.2 or 3 Oct. 1681.    Tristram¹ Coffin [or Coffyn], Mr., son of Peter and Joanna, b. ab. 1605 or '9, in Brixham [or Brixton] parish, Plymouth, Devon, Eng.; m. Dionis Stevens. He came to this country in 1642, with his mother, who d. May, 1661, aged 77; his two sisters, Eunice and Mary [Eunice m. Wm. Butler; Mary m. Alexander Adams of Boston]; his wife and five children. C Nb. states that he first came to Salisbury, thence to Haverhill the same year, thence to Newbury ab. 1648, thence in 1654 or '5 to S. again, where he signed his name "Commissioner of S." He was taxed in S. in 1652 and '59. In 1659, a company formed in Salis. purchased Nantucket [In the summer of 1659, Tristram Coffin and others are said to have visited the island of Nantucket, with Peter Folger of Martha's Vineyard as an interpreter between them and the Indians. Peter Folger, in 1644, mar. Mary Morrill, who is said to have been an inmate of the family of Hugh Peters. Folger became a Baptist and removed to Nantucket. [G. R. 1862, p. 269.], to which island he rem. in 1660, with his wife, mother, and four chil. He died Oct. 2, 1681.
