Early Land Acquistion in Virginia

Records show that three men, Mark Evans, Mathusalem Griffith and Tobias Bright arrived in the area (Roanoke Valley) prior to 1744 from the Conojacular Valley along the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. Griffith settled on Peter's Creek and Mason's Creek between what is now Roanoke and Salem; Bright settled on the northfork of the Roanoke. Possible ancestry of Tobias Bright

I have not verified the following information on the children of Elizabeth & Thomas and I have no other information on this family.

Children: TOBIAS, JOHN, THOMAS?

Thomas Bright was from Chester County, PA. This family has not been traced, but several Brights who appear in Gloucester County, N.J. are apparently the sons of Thomas & Elizabeth. Presumably they lived on the two tracts on Great Mantua Creek which Thomas Bright purchased from Benjamin Braman on 30 Oct. 1719.


a. TOBIAS Tobias married Helena Steelman (Swedish, daughter of Eric & Brita Steelman) circa 1725 and had a son Eric born 9 Sept 1726. On 12 May 1731, Tobias Bright was named co-administrator, with his sister-in-law Bridget (Brita) Steelman of his father-ion-laws, Eric Steelman's estate.

b. JOHN John married Maria __ and had a daughter, Elizabeth born 26 July 1729. William Bright, Isabel Vanneman and Elizabeth Bright were sponsors at t baptism.
