    Thomas Stockton, Sr., was born about 1740 in what is now Albemarle County, Virginia. Thomas was a son of Richard and Agnes Stockton Sr. and a grandson of Davis and Sarah Stockton.

    Thomas was first married to Mary ___?___. Thomas and Mary had several children. After Mary ___?___ died Thomas married Mary Golden in Henry County, Virginia.

    By 1783 Thomas and Mary (nee Golden) Stockton Sr. were living next to the French Broad River in what is now Sevier County, Tennessee. In about 1795 Thomas Stockton moved his family to what is now Clinton County, Kentucky. Thomas Stockton was the first settler in Clinton County and Stockton's Valley is named after him.

    Thomas settled on Spring Creek in Stockton's Valley. He was one of the charter members of the Clear Fork Baptist Church.
