"1. Thomas Oviatt died 28 May 1691 (church record, First Congregational Society, Milford). He married Frances (_____) who was probably a Bryan. He appears in Milford about 1664/5 with his wife Frances. On a conveyance of property in England at We[n]dover, co. Bucks, he was called by Alexander Bryan, nephew. He was in the habit of making visits to England on business, and mention is made of him carrying letters to and from. In 1689 he was town clerk in Milford. His business was apparently that of Tallow Chandlery and soap maker, as he and his wife Frances acknowledge their indebtedness to Richard Bryan, to be paid to the said Richard, his heirs and assigns, within 15 months from the 14th day of May 1684, giving as security, houses, lands, soap, Firkins and ashes 'and what oil shall come in my absence' reserving two or three barrels of oil to procure soap to pay for ashes."
