Uncle Thomas was my favorite Uncle. He used to take me for auto trips around the Portsmouth/Suffolk area. He was an insurance salesman(when he lived in Portsmouth VA), and was the first that I know of in the family to own a television set. He bought a Muntz TV console, with a really big 19 inch screen! I was in the Army when he died. I was stationed in Vietnam, and couldn't come home. His Social Security number was 226-09-7532.

Following is his obituary: Thomas Julius Nixon, Jr., 54, of 1303 Towanda Court died Wednesday in a Norfolk hospital. A native of Elizabeth City, NC, he lived in this area 10 years. He was a machinist in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and was a member of Elizabeth River Baptist Church. He was the husband of Mrs. Irene Cowley Nixon, and a son of the late Thomas J. and Mrs. Lula M. Bristow Nixon. Besides his widow, surviving are three daughters, Mrs. J. Martin Brown of Richmond, Mrs. D.A. Hogan of Portsmouth, and Miss Thelma Irene Nixon of Chesapeake; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Brett of Suffolk, and Mrs. Katherine Whitfield of Texas; a brother, S.J. Nixon of Suffolk, and a half brother, Emory Tidwell of Baltimore. The body will be taken from Francis A. Gay Funeral Home to Elizabeth River Baptist Church for a funeral service Sunday at 3 p.m. by the Rev. J.D. Steward. Moose Lodge 464 will conduct rites in Riverside Memorial Park.
