Thomas Colston Kinney, '89, was born in Virginia in the year 1866, and died in Manila, P. I., about July 1, 1908. He matriculated from Staunton, Va., at the State University in the year 1888, and was a student there for one session. Subsequently, for a number of years, he resided in New York City, where he was engaged in the practice of law, and where he was respected and beloved by a large number of friends. Following the Spanish-American war he went to the Philippine Islands, where he afterward made his home. He lived at Manila, and was a member of the well-known firm of Pilsbury & Sutro, who have offices also in San Francisco. During his career in Manila he represented the largest interests there, and was actively identified with the street railway systems, electric light and power companies, etc., and enjoyed a large practice. Just before going to the Far East he marreid a young lady from Illinois, who with one young son survives him.

    Mr. Thomas C. Kinney.

On Saturday the sad news was received here announcing the death of Mr. Thomas Colston Kinney at Manilla. Early that morning Mr. McH. Holliday, Mr. Kinney's brother-in-law, receive a cablegram from Mr. Lawrence, the law partner of Mr. Kinney in that place announcing his critical illness from peritonitis, and a few hours later another came announcing his death. No particulars were received. Deceased was in Staunton on February 20, 1866, being the son of Mrs. Jean and the late Major A. F. Kinney. He spent all of his young life here and his friends still remember him with pleasure, though for many years he had been here very little. He studied law at the University of Virginia and practiced here and in New York City. In 1892 he married Miss Caroline Johnson [sic], a sister of the first Mrs. Harry St. George Tucker. She lived only a short time and in 1902 he married Miss Maud Francis of Peoria, Illinois. She with a small son, Thomas Colston, Jr., survives him. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. A. F. Kinney, three sisters, Mrs. Mchenry Holliday and Miss Maud Kinney of this city, and Mrs. Grancille Sherwood of Rock Island, Ill., and one brother, Mr. William Galt Kinney. Mr. Kinney had been living in Manilla for about 6 years, and had been very successful in his profession and had been planning to come here and buy a home. The news was a terrible shock to his family, for they did not know of his being sick at all.
