Revolutionary War Pension Information

Information from “Virginia/West Virginia Genealogical Data from Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Records”, Vol. 2, compiled by Patrick G. Wardell, Lt. Col. U.S. Army Ret. :

Hayslet, Thomas - entered service 1780 in Rockbridge County, Virginia, where granted Pension in 1818; resided there in 1820 age 70 with daughter age 24 & son age 16; died 2/28/1826; administrator of soldier's estate, Robert White, 1826. F-S38010, R1238.

Notes

Thomas, emigrant, from London, England, died in Fairfield, Va., this indicates he is the "Virginia" Thomas, that is the Paternal ancestor of the Virginia Hesleps.

This Thomas Heslep--(writer of this information has photostats from a family Bible)--came to America about 1755 on a vessel which his uncle was master. He went to Pennsylvania, presumably to live with the Hesleps already there who, is believed to be relatives. All family accounts say this Thomas fought in the Revolution but his particular record cannot be singled out from numerous "Thomas Hesleps" on the rolls. He married Jane Mueller, apparently in Pennsylvania, and settled in Rockbridge Co., Va., at Fairfield, some 12 miles east of Lexington, Va. No record of a Revolutinary bounty has been found.

He amassed considerable property but either was a poor manager or went on too many bonds for friends, was reduced to near poverty. He believed in education and made his numerous sons study hard. A will, filed in Rockbridge in 1803, by his son William, is a remarkable document in that all the property including "eight Books" is personal and inventoried in detail. It is one of the few wills on file in early Heslep records.

All family accounts say Thomas and Jane had eight sons and some daughters (number unknown).

Thomas, great-grandfather of the writer (Charter Heslep, who created this document Oct. 20, 1951, while living in Silver Springs, MD., now deceased),
