20 Dec 1867 105.28 acres are patented to Sumber Barker, James Crawford and Thomas J. Fletcher - the land was in Township 1-N Range 4-E section 7

somewhere in the late 1860s T. J. and Susannah must divorce. The Clark County Pioneers book reports that Susannah passed away 10 Aug 1880 and Thomas remarried to Evelyn but neither the census or the following support that.

31 May 1869 Thomas Fletcher is shot in Vancouver. A trial for Lewis Van Vleet, Alex and T. M. Coffee ensues, followed by a trial for Fletcher and some of his sons and sons in law. All are found not guilty. The scuffle seems to have resulted from political arguments as well as from a letter sent by Van Vleet to parties near the Sound who refused to publish it. The letter states in part:

"Next to his family. He should have said his two families. His first wife lives about five miles from his second, and depends for her living upon the charities of her children, receiving no assistance from him. His second wife has a farm of her own, and keeps it in her own possession for the benefit of herself and children; and allows him to live with her."

During the trial, it came out that Fletcher had threatened Van Vleet with "the consequences" if he did not retract the portion of the letter related to his family.
