Facts and Events
Below is a verbatim excerpt from Robert Charles Anderson, FASG [Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists], The Great Migration Directory: Immigrants to New England, 1620–1640; A Concise Compendium (Boston: New England Historical and Genealogical Society, 2015), 46: Brownell, Thomas: [emigrated from] London; 1639; Braintree [Massachusetts], Portsmouth [Rhode Island] [Lechford 252; Waters 646-47; TAG 36:126-127; RIR 21:99-114; Austin 29]. Below are verbatim excerpts from TAG [The American Genealogist] 36:126-27: In… the will of… Thomas Wilson the elder, “sometimes citizen and clothworker of London but now resident at Ryecroft in the parish of Rawmarsh and county of York,” … he gave legacies… [including money] to “my cousin Thomas Brownell of Portsmouth, Rhode Island in New England and his children.” The Boyd Marriage Index at the Society of Genealogists states that Robert Brownell married Mary Wilson in 1605 at Sheffield, co. York… Baptisms from parish register of Rawmarsh, co. York: 23 March 1605 (1605/6?) George Brownell… 5 June 1608 Thomas Brownell… 28 July 1611 Ann Brownell… The implication is that the George and Thomas Brownell baptized at Rawmarch in 1605 and 1608 respectively are the “cousins” [i.e. nephews] named in the will of Thomas Wilson of Rawmarsh in 1657, and that they (and Ann) were presumably children of Robert Brownell and Mary Wilson. Children of Thomas Brownell of Portsmouth were named Mary, George, and Robert. He married Anne Bourne 20 March 1637 at St. Benet and St. Peters, Paul’s Wharf, London… <== end of TAG excerpts References
