About Thomas Berry

Private Thomas Thompson Berry' enlisted in Company H of the 37th Infantry in March 1862 at Abingdon. He is the brother of Captain James Edmondson Berry. He deserted May 22nd 1862 at New Market, Virginia and stayed gone until at least December 1862. He was wounded on the third day of Gettysburg, July 3rd, 1863[1][2]. He was court-martialed in September 1863 for desertion. Management must not have done much to him because he deserted again in September 1864. When he returned, he was released on amnesty and restored to duty. He may have deserted a third time because I do Not find him among the Appomattox Parolees.

Burial

He did survive the War, and is buried at Zion Methodist Church Cemetery in Washington County. The Cemetery is located on Highway 58, between Damascus and Abingdon, Virginia.
