Theresa Kelly was born in New York in May 1884. She was her parents' first child to be born in America. Her father Robert had emigrated in 1882, with his wife Maria and the children following in August 1883. Indeed, Theresa was born almost exactly nine months after Maria joined Robert in America.

The family lived in Manhattan in New York City. As a young woman, Theresa worked as a cash-girl. In 1905, Theresa married a Francis Waters. She has yet to be researched after her marriage.
