3. THEOPHILUS3 NORWOOD, SR. (EDWARD2, WILLIAM "THE IMMIGRANT"1) was born 1700 in NC. He married ELIZABETH JOHNSON, daughter of WILLIAM JOHNSON and SARAH.

Children of THEOPHILUS NORWOOD and ELIZABETH JOHNSON are:

SAMUEL4 NORWOOD, b. 1724, Augusta county, VA ; d. October 29, 1790, Abberville, VA .
4. i.
5. ii. THEOPHILUS NORWOOD, JR., b. 1725, NC; d. SC.

Everything I read about Samuel Norwood who married Elizabeth Brush, and went to Abbeville District, SC, says he was the son of Theophilus Norwood and was born in Augusta Co., Virginia.

I need help. I find Samuel and the Brushes in Augusta Co., VA, particularly from 1745 to 1765, but I find no Theophilus. I found one reference to a Theophilus as chain-bearer in a secondary source, in Augusta Co., VA, in 1749. The only other Norwoods in Augusta Co., VA, are a Benjamin (1763) and a John (1785).

Samuel and Elizabeth with other families from Augusta County, eventually went to Abbeville District, SC. Separately, Theophilus Norwood's family went from NC to Darlington Co., SC, a good distance from Abbeville. There were eventually Theophilus Norwood descendants in Abbeville District and they intermarried with the Calhouns and kept slaves, but their location and family connections and prosperity were very different from those of the Thomas Norwoods, descended from Samuel and Elizabeth Brush. I don't think the two family groups were related, but I am open to evidence that they were.

Where is the evidence that Theophilus Norwood, I, was in Augusta Co., VA? According to the quote above, Samuel had a brother Theophilus, born the very next year in [Carteret Co.,] NC, 393 miles away on the coast. Samuel appears as an adult in Augusta Co., VA, with no other Norwoods apart from the Benjamin Norwood cited above. He is a land-owner there and a militia captain in the French war 1756-1758.

Can someone provide the evidence that Theophilus Norwood, I, was in Augusta Co., VA, in 1724? The county was formed in 1738 and government established in 1745. I have checked Orange County from which Augusta was formed but do not find any reference to Norwoods there.

Hoping for help sorting this out.
