Captain Theophilus Baldwin, born in Connecticut of Scotish descent, settled east of the city, along the lake. The area today is known as Baldwin's Bay. He was a caulker by trade; a part time farmer; itinerant preacher; and a teacher. A very hard apple that can still be found grown here, the Baldwin, honors the family name. There were seven children and now, in 1980,several descendents are still residing in the area.
