The following research was contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha Ph.D.: Theodore Frelinghuysen Jackson (1890-1939), was named after Ernest’s uncle, Theodore Frelinghuysen Jackson (1830-1913); indeed, Ernest was employed in his uncle’s law firm, so he must have felt indebted to him even before he was left $5,000 in the elder Theodore Frelinghuysen Jackson’s will in 1913.

Theodore Frelinghuysen Jackson (`890-1939) must have been an adventurous soul, because eleven years later, we find that he died at the rather young age of 49, very far from home, where he remains today.

Death Notices for Theodore Frelinghuysen Jackson [unfortunately, the actual date of his demise was not specified here]: The New York Times, Wednesday, May 10, 1939, Page 23 and reprinted May 11, 1939, Page 25: “JACKSON—Theodore F., suddenly, at Williamstown, Victoria, Australia, son of the late Ernest H. Jackson and Frances Gould Jackson of Quogue, L. I.”

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Thursday, May 11, 1939, Page 15, Column 2: “JACKSON— THEODORE F., suddenly, at Williamstown, Victoria, Australia, son of the late Ernest H. Jackson and Frances Gould Jackson of Quogue, L. I.”

Williamstown is a southern suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. I was able to find a repository of digitized historic Australian newspapers on the Internet, and a subsequent search of these led me to find a death announcement and a funeral notice for him in The Argus, a Melbourne-based newspaper. The death announcement states that he died as the result of an unspecified accident, but I could not find any newspaper articles concerning whatever mishap befell him.

The Argus was a morning daily newspaper in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, that was established in 1846 and closed in 1957. A digitized copy of this issue is available on-line at http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/page/597831 .

Death and Funeral Notices for Theodore F. Jackson from The Argus: The Argus, Monday, May 1, 1939, Page 10, Column 1: "JACKSON.—On the 30th April at Williamstown Hospital (result of accident) Theodore F. (Teddy) Jackson, 173 Nelson place, Williamstown, beloved only son of Frances G. and the late Ernest Henry Jackson (New York, U.S.A.), beloved friend of Mr. and Mrs. A. Craig (Williamstown), aged 49 years. —At rest (Remains at E. W. Jackson’s chapel, North Williamstown.)”

The Argus, Monday, May 1, 1939, Page 10, Column 3: "JACKSON.—The Friends of the late THEODORE F. (Teddy) JACKSON, of 173 Nelson place, Williamstown, are respectfully informed that his remains will be interred in the Williamstown Cemetery. The funeral will move from E. W. Jackson's chapel Ferguson street, North Williamstown, THIS DAY (Monday, 1st May), at conclusion of service, commencing 3:10 pm. ERNEST W JACKSON, Funeral Director, Williamstown and Newport, Tel. W'town 25.”

Note the really strange coincidence: Theodore Frelinghuysen Jackson dies over ten thousand miles from his birthplace and the funeral director just happens to be a near namesake of his father [only the middle name is different]; indeed, given that Australia was also a British colony, it is possible that the funeral director might even be a distant cousin. ---end of Dr. Troha's remarks---
