Susannah Swallow was born on New Year's Day 1811 and baptised three weeks later at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of Sarah Swallow, formerly Hopkins, and her husband William Swallow, a labourer.

On 19th June 1831, aged 20, Susannah married a man named William Lovell, from the nearby parish of King's Walden. Their first child was born and baptised at Wheathampstead the following year, although the family's abode was given as King's Walden.

Between 1832 and 1853 William and Susannah appear to have had eleven children, born variously in Wheathampstead, King's Walden and Offley parishes. However, five of the children died when less than a year old, and another died when she was about five years old. Susannah's father died at Wheathampstead in 1835.

The 1841 census finds the family living at Darley Hall in the parish of King's Walden. William was working as an agricultural labourer. Back in Wheathampstead, Susannah's mother died in 1848.

By 1851 Susannah and William had moved to the hamlet of Mangrove Green, which straddled the parishes of Offley and Lilley.[9] Susannah was described as a straw plaiter in 1851.

In 1861 they were living at a cottage at Mangrove Green next to the William IV public house, which stands on the east side of the green. In 1861 William was described as a ploughman.

William died in 1868, aged 58.

The 1871 census finds Susannah still living next door to the William IV at Mangrove Green with her daughters Sophia and Mary Ann and her grandson Montague, who was Sophia's son.

Susannah continued to live with her daughter Mary Ann, who later married an Eli Brown. They appear in the 1881 census at an unspecified location in the parish of Lilley (which could well be still at Mangrove Green). Some time between 1881 and 1891 they moved into the nearby town of Luton, appearing there in a four-roomed house at 101 Boyle Street in the 1891 census.

Susannah died in Luton in 1896, aged 85.
