He married Margaret Augusta Searle at Castana, Iowa in 1864. She was born in Stark County, Iowa in 1840. They had four children, probably all born in Onawa, Iowa: Leonard C. Sears, b. 1865, Melvin L. Sears, b. 16 September 1866, Charles W. Sears, b. 13 May 1870, and Carrie E. Sears, b. 14 March 1874. Later Leonard Sears lived in Sacramento, California.
