On 9 Jan 1809 at the age of 25 he was married in Millbrook to 21 year-old Mary Eastman. They had at least six children, all born and baptised at Millbrook: 1. George, b. abt 1809, bap. 7 Jan 1810 2. Five years later on 22 Jul 1827 Stephen remarried Anne Eldridge at Millbrook. Anne already had a two year-old daughter Elizabeth Eldridge from a previous relationship. Their first child Joseph was baptised on 23 Sep 1827 in Millbrook, so she must have been pregnant when they wed. Joseph died the following August 1828 and was buried in Millbrook. Stephen and Anne had at least six children, all baptised at Millbrook: 1. Joseph 2. Ellen b. abt 1829, bap. 19 Jul 1829 3. James b. abt 1833, bap. 7 Apr 1833 4. Henry b. abt 1835, bap. 12 Jul 1835 5. They worked as or married agricultural labourers, carpenters, wheelwrights, innkeepers and groomsmen. In the 1841 census Stephen was working as an agricultural labourer and living at Somerset Cottage with Anne and five children including his eldest son George and her daughter Elizabeth (here called Elizabeth Young). His sister-in-law Jane (Eastman) Cropp, her husband and six children also lived in the cottage. In 1851 he was working as a labourer and living on Romsey Road in Millbrook with Anne, six children including his eldest son George and her daughter Elizabeth Eldridge, and two "Eldridge" grandchildren that were probably Elizabeth's children. In 1861 Stephen was working as a labourer and living at Maybush with Anne, children Henry, Fanny (Frances) and Ellen, as well as three grandchildren. His widowed sister-in-law Jane (Eastman) Cropp also lived at Maybush with three of her children and worked as a laundress. Stephen died at the age of 82 on 1 Mar 1866 at Maybush in Millbrook from "senectus" (old age). His daughter Ellen who reported the death had been present at his death.
