Death

Stephen's death certificate says he was 81 years old, died of 'complications' and the informant was Byrum Hughes. No birth information was given. He was a widower.

Daily Telegram. Clarksburg, WV. Fri., May 5, 1916. pg. 3 Pioneer Resident of Salem Dies in the County Infirmary Following a Long Illness

 Stephen Hughes, aged 81 years, a pioneer resident of Salem, died at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the county infirmary where he had been an inmate for some time. The body was brought to this city and prepared for burial and were taken to Miletus Friday morning where the funeral services were held and the burial was in the Eddy cemetery.
 Surviving relatives of the deceased man are Byron Hughes, of Salem, Zibbie Hughes, of Harrisville, sons, and Mrs Lula Nutter, of Miletus. (Note - actually Mrs Late Nutter)

Note copied from unknown author at the Doddridge County web site: Grandson of Jonathan Hughes, an Indian scout and and ensign in the Navy during the Revolutionary War. A marker was erected at his grave in the Eddy Cemetery in 1925 by the D.A.R.
