Sophia Seegers was born on her parents' farm in 1871. Because both parents had had previous marriages and families, Sophia had numerous older half-siblings, including two half-sisters named Sophia Seegers. One of these Sophias had died in 1868, and the other had changed her name to Caroline, so by 1871 the name Sophia was available again for another baby girl.

Sophia married Fred Hitzemann in 1894 and bore him four sons and three daughters. They remained on the Seegers farm until 1920, when they bought a house on Carroll Street in Hammond. When son Edwin's wife died after childbirth, Edwin moved in with them so that they could help him care for his two young children.

Sophia had to have surgery in 1928. She came through it, but the operation had been too much of a strain on her system, and she died shortly afterward. She was 57.
