At proceedings stated that at the time of his marriage to to his brother's widow, Emma. and before, he lived at Dodge Co., Wisconsin, and in March 1877 he bought land in Rudolph, Wood, Wisconsin. He claimed to have worked his father's land until July 28, 1889, when his father (William) became dissatisfied with his work.
