Sarah Singleton was baptised on 20th August 1823 at Foston in Lincolnshire, daughter of Elizabeth Singleton, formerly Ingram, and her husband William Singleton, a huckster. Sarah was their youngest childn. When she was only four years old her father died.
On 25th May 1849, aged 25, she was married to Jonathan Parr at Epperstone in Nottinghamshire, about seventeen miles west of Foston. They went on to have three daughters together between 1850 and 1862. The first two daughters were born at Epperstone, where Jonathan initially worked as a frame work knitter.
Back in Foston, Sarah's mother died in 1859.
By 1861 Jonathan was working as a gamekeeper, and the family spent a few years travelling around, presumably living on or near the big estates which employed him. In the 1861 census they were at Trowell in Nottinghamshire, then in 1862 they were at Blakenhall in Cheshire when their youngest daughter was born. In 1871 they were living at Wollaton back in Nottinghamshire.
By 1881 Jonathan had changed occupation again, and he was working as a grocer in the town of Hucknall, near Nottingham. He died in that area eight years later in 1889, aged 66.
The 1891 census finds Sarah working as a grocer in Hucknall, indicating that she continued the family business for some time after Jonathan's death.
By 1901 Sarah had left Hucknall and had gone to live with her youngest daughter and her husband, who lived at the station in Ranskill in Nottinghamshire. Sarah died in that area in 1905, aged 82.
