Sarah Parker’s origins have yet to be established. The age given when she died suggests that she was born around 1754. In the 1841 census she said that she was not born in Hampshire.

Sarah’s first confirmed sighting is on 21st April 1782, when she married a labourer named Barzillai Savage, who was 35. He was originally from Houghton, a village in Hampshire close to the Wiltshire border. They married at St Lawrence’s Church in the city of Winchester.

Sarah and Barzillai stayed in Winchester after their marriage, having nine children baptised there between 1782 and 1795.

In 1808, Barzillai died, aged 62. Sarah outlived him by nearly 34 years. She appears in the 1841 census living in Lower Brook Street in Winchester, with her son Joseph Savage, who was the Town Crier, and his family.

Sarah’s youngest son Frederick died in 1818, aged 22.

Sarah died on 15th March 1842 in Winchester, when she was said to be either 87 or 88. She had lived to see at least three great grandchildren - probably more.
