Sarah Ann Marshall was baptised on 2nd July 1826 at Hatfield in Hertfordshire, daughter of Hannah Marshall, formerly Arnold, and her husband James Marshall, an agricultural labourer. Sarah was the eldest of the couple's five children, four of whom lived to adulthood. The 1841 census finds Sarah living with her parents and siblings at Mill Green in Hatfield.

On 3rd June 1849, aged 22, Sarah married Frederick Fulham, a paper hanger from the St Lukes area of London. They married in London at Christ Church in Marylebone, then lived for the next few years in the Clerkenwell area close to where Frederick was from. In the mid 1850s they moved briefly to Poplar in east London, then south to Camberwell, where they were living at the time of the 1861 census. As well as three children they also had Frederick's adult niece Josephine (who was only slightly younger than Sarah and Frederick themselves) living with them.

Shortly after the 1861 census they left London and moved out to Hertfordshire, settling at Bushey, near Watford. They 1871 census finds the family living there at Paddock Road, now joined by two of Frederick's adult nieces as well as their own four children.

Frederick died in 1884. Sarah outlived him by just under two years, dying in 1885 aged 59.
