Sarah Harry was baptised on 12th March 1820 at Saltash in Cornwall, daughter of Elizabeth Harry, formerly Worth, and her husband Robert Harry, a labourer and waterman. In 1835, when Sarah was about fifteen, her mother Elizabeth died. Two years later Sarah's father remarried.

Sarah appears in the 1841 census living at Oxford Row in Plymouth with her cousin Elizabeth (whose father John Harry was Sarah's father's brother). Sarah later returned to Saltash, where she married an agricultural labourer named William Carpenter on 17th June 1845, aged 25. They appear to have had two children together. The 1851 census finds them living at Turnpike Gate in Saltash, along with Sarah's brother in law James Watson, who had been married to Sarah's late sister Mary. In 1861 the family was living at Forder, a hamlet just to the south of Saltash town.

In 1865 Sarah's father Robert died, and Sarah was one of the executors of his will. Sarah's husband William died four years later in 1869. After his death Sarah lived with her son Robert, who does not appear to have married. For several years he ran the Commercial Hotel at 92 Fore Street in Saltash. Sarah appears there in both the 1871 and 1881 censuses.

Some time between 1881 and 1891 Robert and Sarah left the Commercial Hotel and moved to 67 Fore Street, where they appear in the 1891 census with Robert working as a gardener.

Sarah died in 1896, aged 76.
