Sarah Gregg was born on 1 August 1841 in Ireland. Her parents were born in Ireland. She immigrated to the United States in 1861. Sarah became the second wife of Samuel Mahorter, son of Samuel Mehorter and Mary Watt, about 1866. Sarah and Samuel appeared on the census of 1870 with children Mary and Samuel in Philadelphia's 20th ward.

Sarah and Samuel appeared on the census of 1880 with their children Hugh, Robert, and Rachel at 30th and Uxford Streets, Philadelphia. Sarah's husband, Samuel Mahorter, died on 18 June 1883 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Philadelphia. In 1886, Sarah lived at 2316 Jefferson Street, Philadelphia. Sarah lived Old Ladies Home on Wissinoming Street, Tacony, Philadelphia County, in 1890. By 1894, she lived at 7208 Wissinoming Street, Tacony.

Sarah appeared on the census of 1900 5 Cotman Street, Philadelphia, with her sons Hugh and Robert. They were renting their house. Sarah Mahorter was listed as a widow, married 30 years, who had 10 children, with only 2 still living. Sarah (Gregg) Mahorter died 8 March 1909 at her home at 5 Cotman Street of valvular heart disease and bronchitis. She was buried on March 11th at Magnolia Cemetery in Philadelphia.
