Sarah was born in 1827, the first child of John and Hannah Chatt, who lived in the Moorhouses just northeast of Allendale Town. She lived with her parents in the Moorhouses into her 30's, with her three siblings who mostly lived there into adulthood too. Around 1860 (age 33), she had an illegitimate son, John. Sometime before 1871, she has moved out, to Low Acton, a farm near Sinderhope, where she raises her son John, and lives the rest of her life.

Sometime in the early 1880s, her son John marries and soon has a daughter Laura Annie. In the 1901 census, John and family live in Elswick, Newcastle. By the 1911 census (after Sarah has died), John and his family are living in Low Acton, where Sarah lived.
