Family ledgend is that a well to do man asked Michael and Sarah (Wisner) Camfield to take in Sarah for which, at first, they were paid. The man and the payments dissapeared after a year or two, but at that point it didn't matter because the couple loved the child and raised her as their own.

RESIDENT OF BUCHANAN 70 YEARS, DIES

BUCHANAN, June 26.- Southwestern Michigan lost a member of one of the best known pioneer families in the state in the death of Mrs. Sarah Ann Carlisle, 76, Tuesday night. She had spent 70 years of her life in this city. Mrs. Carlisle was the widow of the late Civil war veteran, Ashley Carlisle, a stone mason who cut the stone for the mansions of the Studebaker and Oliver families at South Bend and Elkhart, Ind., and walked home from these cities to spend Sundays. There being no other conveyance at hand, Mr. Carlisle walked 25 miles from Elkhart and 15 miles from South Bend whenever he was working in those places and thought nothing of it. Mrs. Carlisle died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Tammerson Binns, where she had resided since the death of her husband. A son, D. M. Carlisle of Buchanan, also survives. Plans are incomplete for the funeral, but it is believed that services will be held Saturday. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Mrs. Carlisle was born in Syracuse, N.Y., August 5, 1853, and came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Camfield from the east to Buchanan in 1860. She was married in Buchanan October, 1876.
