Samuel served in Capt. John Stout’s Company, Monmouth, NJ in the Revolution. He deeded land in 1806 to a Henry Seguine that was adjacent to that of John Jeffrey (his brother-in-law). Silas Crane was one of the County Court judges.

He married in 1776 Alice Jeffrey " of his native county of a very important family with a long history." They moved in July 1818 to Fairfield, Highland Co, OH. They were preceded by their son Isaac, and his wife and his four children who settled on Lees Creek. At least 6 children followed or came with their father to Ohio. (Penelope, Hannah and Lydia, all married in New Jersey. Phoebe married Dr. Conway, a desc of Joseph Conway, the original owner of the “Conway Grant.”) Sam’l Sr. and Alice established their home near Highland, later the Charles P. Woodmansee farm and now the Robert Manuel Farm.

Shortly after arriving, Samuel bought 700 acres of land, a part of the original Conway Military Survey. Nearly all of the original purchase was still owned by his descendants in 1894.
