"Samuel Tate was born Nov 1763 on the ocean trip from Ireland, a son of Samuel Tate and Elizabeth Caldwell. He removed to Bloody Run [Bedford Co PA] c1798 and purchased all the land south [Bloody Run] stream. He kept the Inn in that section of the county. He was married two times: (1) Elizabeth Alexander, and after the death of his first wife, he married (2) Mrs. Jane M. Cochran (Hamilton) of Lancaster Co PA." (Mentzel, 190)
