Land Warrant:

  • 4 Jan. 1749/50 Samuel SHORT of Augusta Co. warrant for about 400 acres adj. John LEINBERGER on a branch of Hawksbill. Survey returned for 390 acres [no date]. Chain carriers Edwd. PRICE, Zachery PRICE. [See 13 Aug. 1770 entry]

Acquisition of Land from Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants:

  • K-32: Samuel Short of Frederick County, 416 acres in said Co. on Branches of Hawksbill. Surv. George Hume. Adj. Henry Crum. 4 Nov. 1757. [Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, 1742-1775, Vol. 2, Gertrude E. Gray, pg. 113].

  • 7 Nov. 1727 - James ATKINS Deeds of Lease and Release for land unto William HAINSFORD was proved by the Oaths of George HOME, John QUARLES & Samuel SHORT and Sarah the Wife of the said James ATKINS acknowledged her right of dower of the said land unto said William HANSFORD att whose motion the same were admitted to record.
  • 7 Feb. 1732/3 - In the action of Debt brought p. Phillip ALEXANDER agst William CENNENTON & Samuel SHORT Deft. no Declaration being filed, ordered that the suit be dismist.
  • 7 Mar. 1738/9 - In the action of Trespass upon the case between Archibald McPHERSON & Compa. Merchts., Plts. and Samuell SHORT, Deft. the same being agreed, therefore it is ordered that the suit be dismist.
  • 1 July 1740 - On the petition of William HANSFORD Gent. against Samuel SHORT for two pounds fourteen shillings and four pence current money by Account, the Plt. made out on Oath that two pounds thirteen shillings and four pence curren money was due to him on ballance, Judgment for the same with costs is grantd; It is therefore considered the sd. SHORT pay the sd. HANSFORD.
  • 3 Feb. 1741/2 - Samuel SHORT for two pounds eight shillings and one farthing current money, the same being agreed, it is ordered to be dismist.
  • 3 Aug. 1743 - At the motion of Samuel SHORT, he is allowed for five days attendance having sworn to the same as an evidence summoned by Richd. TUTT, Gent. ads. Wm. HENSLEE. It is ordered that the sd. TUTT pay him on hundred pounds of tobacco for the same as the Law directs.
  • 7 Mar. 1743/4 - At the motion of Samuel SHORT, he is allowed for seven days attendance having sworn to the time as an evidence summoned by Henry SPARKES agst. BLEDSOE. It is ordered the said SPARKES pay unto him one hundres and seventy five pounds of tobacco for the same as the Law directs.

  • 6 Nov. 1744 - William COLLINS and Joseph COLLINS came into Court and acknowledged themselves indebted to our Sovereign Lord the King in the sum of twenty pounds current money to be levied on their several Lands and Tenements goods and chattels if the sd. Williamd shall fail to appear at the next Court held for this County & answer the Complaint of Saml. SHORT on Suspicion of Felony & not to depart thence without the leave of the Court. The King and Saml. SHORT agst. William COLLINS the same is continued.
  • 5 Dec. 1744 - William COLLINS agst. Samuel SHORT Judgment by Nihil Dicet is grantd the Plt. and a Writ of Inquiry to be awarded next Court.
  • 6 Feb. 1744/5 - William COLLINS agst Samuel SHORT the same is continued at the Deft.'s costs.

  • 3 Dec. 1745 - Samuel SHORT, Felix GUILBURT and Mungo PRICE, each of them personally came before the Court and acknowledged themselves to stand indebtd to our Sovereign Lord the King his heirs and successors each in the sum of ten pounds current money to be levied on their several land & tenements goods and chattells if they should fail to appear before this Court on the first Tuesday in May next as evidences for the King agst. Alexander McWILLAN and not depart thence without the leave of th e Court.
  • 6 May 1746 - Samuel SHORT, Felix GUILBIRT and Mungo PRICE each of them came into Court and acknowledged themselves indebted to our Sovereign Lord th King his heirs and successors in the sum of ten pounds current money to be levied on their several lands & tenemants goods & chattells if either of them fail to appear as evidences for our sd. Lord the King against Alexander McWILLAN at the next Court held for this County & not to depart thence without the leave of the sd. Court.
  • 3 Jun 1746 - Felix GUILBURT allowed three days attendance and forty three miles coming and going three times as and evidence for the King against Alexander McWILLAN. Samuel SHORT alloweed for three days and thirty miles coming and going three times for the same against the same. Mungo PRICE allowed for three days and thirty miles coming and going three times for the same against the same. [Note: Thirty miles from the Spotsylvania Court House could be in Culpeper County, where Samuel later was for a time].

  • undated] 1746 - The estate of John BOWMER [filed in 1756 in Culpeper Co., which was created in 1748 from Orange County] received a payment of 0/9/0 from John NIX. [Note: This is believed to be the John NICKS/NIX that was the father-in-law of Moses SHORT.]
  • 25 Sep 1746, John CHRISTOPHER, John PETTY & Samuel SHORT ordered to view the way from the Plantation of Alexander WAUGH to the south west Mountains Road through the lands of Francis CONWAY and report whether it would be a convenient bridle way. [Note: Alexander WAUGH purchased 150 acres on 27 Apr. 1738 from John TALIAFERRO, Gent. of Spotsylvania Co, adjacent to land granted the wife of Jno. CHRISTOPHER and her too (sic) daughters.]

    It is believed that Thomas SHORT who married Nancy was more likely a brother
    (rather than father) to John SHORT, and that they were both sons of Samuel SHORT
    who died in 1764, and brothers to the Samuel proved as the son of the elder Samuel.
