The following is from a great-great-grandson who prefers his name not mentioned:
Samuel Moss was born in Virginia on September 12, 1821, the son of George W. Moss. (There is disagreement over his mother, but it seems more likely he is from George's second marriage, to Tabitha). At a young age, Samuel and his family moved to Bowling Green, Clay County, Indiana.
Samuel Moss is a veteran of the Mexican American War (mustered in June 23, 1846, in New Albany, Indiana). He fought with the Indiana Infantry, 2nd Regiment, Company C, at the Battle of Buena Vista (Mexico) where he was wounded in action on February 23, 1847. (There is much info available about this.) (Note: My grandmother's sister was named "Buenavista" in his honor.) He mustered out on June 23, 1847, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
He married Sarah Alexander in Bowling Green, Indiana, on November 11, 1847, shortly after he returned from war, according to his Compiled Military Service File from the National Archives.
Their first nine of eleven children were born in Bowling Green:

Samuel Moss is also a veteran of the Civil War (mustered in October 26, 1864, near the end of the war). He was in Indiana, 43rd Regiment, Company A, where he was a guard at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana. He mustered out on June 15, 1865, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
