Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Image:McCutcheonSamuelBordenSW.jpg

Samuel McCutcheon's land (Borden Tract SW at Beverley Manor Line, 600 acres, 1742) as shown on the map meticulously drawn by J.R. Hildebrand, cartographer. This map is copyrighted©, used by permission of John Hildebrand, son of J.R. Hildebrand, April, 2009. Land of Samuel's brother John McCutcheon is nearby to the east, in Beverley Manor.

Records in Orange County, Virginia:

  • 3-4 Aug. 1742. Benjamin Borden of Orange County to Samll. McCutchan of same. Lease and release; for £18 current money, 600 acres, part of 92,100 acres of pattin land 6 Nov. 1739... near a branch of Sharrando (Shenandoah)... a line of Borden's tract be allso a line of Beverley Manor... Benjamin Borden. Wit: John Shields, Jorg [Gorg] (W) Deves, Nathan Loosk. 26 Aug. 1742. Acknowledged by Benjamin Borden, Gent. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 8, Pages 101-104].
  • 7 February 1745 - Land Survey for Samuel McCutchin for 112 acres "Joyning to the land he lives on", by Thomas Lewis, Surveyor. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 10, Dorman, pg. 53]. (Note: this tract appears to be just north of Samuel's tract patented in 1742, and adjoining, just over the boundary of the Borden Tract. It is the same 112-acre tract sold to his son William in 1759 (listed below)).

Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 159.--21st August, 1746. Samuel McCutchen and Francis, his wife to James Shields, cordwinder, £18.5.0; 298-1/2 acres, part of 600 acres on Moffetts Creek bought from Borden; corner to Nathan Lusk, adjoining patent line of Beverley Manor. Witnesses, William Adair, Rob. Graham, James Trimble. Frances ( ) McCouchen. Acknowledged by both, 21st August, 1746.
  • Page 225.--22d November, 1759. Samuel McCutchin (McCotshin) to William McCutchin, £50, 112 acres on head branches of Cathew's River, a line of Burden's great tract, near said McCutchen's house. (Note: William McCutcheon was most likely the son of Samuel, as William had just reached adulthood).
  • Page 359.--12th May, 1768. Samuel McCutchan, Sr., and Frances ( ) to Samuel McCutchon, Jr., son of said Samuel 5 shillings, and diverse and good causes done to me; tract Samuel, Sr., now lives on, 150 acres; corner Borden's patent line; William Sprout's line; also all properties. Teste: Robert Patterson, Chas. Campbell, Arter Hamilton. Delivered: Jno. McCutcheon, March Court, 1774.
  • Page 373.--12th May, 1768. Samuel McCutchan, Sr., and Frances ( ) to John McCutchan, Jr., £__, divers reasons and good causes done to me, Samuel, by son John, 150 acres; Borden's patent line on northwest; William Sproul's line; Samuel McCutcheon, Jr.'s, line. Delivered: John McCutchon, March, 1774.
  • Page 375.--15th March, 1768. Samuel McCutchan, Jr., binds himself in £200 to take care of his father Samuel and his mother. Samuel, Sr., agrees to convey 20 acres to Samuel, Jr., when he is no longer able to do for himself. Delivered: Jno. McCutchan, July, 1775.

Identity of Samuel McCutcheon's wife - Frances

Caution! Some researchers have identifed the wife of Samuel McCutcheon as "Frances Jeanette Noble", daughter of John Noble and Mary Calhoun. This appears very doubtful, since Samuel's wife Frances would have been probably born before 1717 (Samuel and Frances had to have been married by 1735), which would have clearly made her too old to have been a daughter of John Noble and Mary Calhoun. Other sources have Jane Noble, daughter of John Noble and Mary Calhoun as marrying Moses Davis. More research is necessary to determine the correct identity of Samuel McCutcheon's wife.

Processioning List of 1759

"Processioning" was the process or periodically reviewing and agreeing upon property lines between settlers. Processioning Lists can be useful in determining the area of a settler and the neighboring settlers at a specific time period:
  • Page 260.--1759: Processioned by James Gilmore and Samuel McCutcheon, viz: For David Cunningham, for Mathew Wilson, for John Buchanan, for Charles Berry, for Robert Gaml, for Thos. Berry, for David Hays, for James Bower, for Alex. Campbell, for Wm. Campbell, for James Moffett, for Arthur Hamilton, for Samuel Downey, for James Callison, for Alex. McFeeters, for David Campbell, for James McCutcheon, for John McCutcheon, for Wm. McCutcheon, for Wm. Sprowl, for Wm. Martin, for James Trotter, for Samuel McCutcheon, for Wm. McCutcheon, Jr., for James Hunter, for Robert Campbell, for John Risk, for James Gilmore, for Francis Donalay, for Wm. Ledgerwood, for Capt. James Lockhart, for Wm. Hunter. (Note: the William McCutcheon, Jr., listed above is most likely the son of Samuel McCutcheon. "Jr." was sometimes used as a term to mean "younger", not necessarily as the usual usage of "Jr.".)
