Samuel Maxwell (b-1781, d-1848). He first appeared in the personal property tax roll for Montgomery Co. Va in 1801. He married Martha Patton there in 1802. She was the daughter of Thomas Patton and had two brothers, Sampson and Henry that were surety for the marriage. Samuel and Martha lived there through 1805 and then moved on. The next documented apperance was in Jackson Co. Tn when he was commisioned a captain in the Tennessee militain Jackson Co. Tn. In 1814 he took a company of men from Jackson Co. Tn and walked to New Orleans and fought with Andrew Jackson against the British. One major battle occured and the British lost over 2000 men and Jackson lost only 13 men. After the war Samuel returned to Jackson Co. Tn, where he owned over 800 acres and he reared 5 sons and 6 daughters. From the union of Samuel and Martha there are over 5000 decendents now. When he first appeared in Montgomery Co. He had a mule. This indicates that he must have had family around some place for him to have a mule at only 20 years old.
