Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

• Page 321.--27th May, 1751. Borden, etc., to Samuel Lyle, 235 acres on Mill Creek; corner to James McClung; corner Jno. McNabb. Teste: Richard Woods, Alexander McMullan, John Lyle.

• Page 329.--28th May, 1751. John McNabb to Samuel Lyle, 101 acres, part of Benj. Borden's great tract; on Mill Creek; corner Isaac Taylor. Teste: Richard Woods, Alexander McMullan, John Lyle.

SAMUEL LYLE.

Samuel Lyle, the fourth emigrant, was a son of Robert Lyle, a brother of the three emigrants, Matthew, Daniel and John and a grandson, therefore, of James Lyle and Margaret Snoddy. Samuel Lyle was born about 1725, near Larne, County Antrim, Ireland. He emigrated to Virginia about 1 750, when his paternal uncles had been settled there for some years. For a time he made his home with his uncle, Daniel Lyle, but afterward settled land for himself on Timher Ridge, in what is now Rockbridge County. His first home stood a mile from Fairfield, Virginia. Later he moved northeast of Lexington. He was an important member of the community, Justice of the Peace, Vestryman, etc.; he married Sarah McClung, a daughter of William McClung, and his six children were:

(1) William Lyle.

(2) James Lyle.

(3) Mary Lyle.

(4) Jean Lyle.

(5) Elizabeth Lyle.

(6) Sarah Lyle.

Of the foregoing:

William Lyle married Julia Ann Stuart, and had children. After her death William Lyle married for his second wife, Elizabeth Lyle (his second cousin, daughter of James Lyle and Hannah Alexander). They also had children. William Lyle was a soldier of the Revolution.

James Lyle married Margaret Baker and had one daughter who married Abram Smith, and had children.

Mary Lyle 'married John Dalhouse, and had children.

Jane Lyle married James Ramsey and had children.

Elizabeth Lyle married Michael Graham, a Revolutionary soldier, and had children.

Sarah Lyle married her cousin, Matthew Lyle, and had children.

This completes a brief account of the Lyles. Each of the lines mentioned can be carried out to the present date.

I can't take time now to sort out Ramsey stuff so I'll just give you a taste: On a day in 1786 (from memory/will chk it later] my 4th great grandfather Michael Graham married Eliz. Lyle in Lexington Va. It was a double ring ceremony, James Ramsey married Elizabeth Lyle's sister. The Lyle women were daughters of Samuel Lyle, of Lexington, Va. whose line comprises one of the four sections of the Lyle genealogy. I have a photocopy of the actual marriage certif. [I believe Michael & James' signatures appear on the document.] Again, I'll check on it. Michael's older bro. Rev. Wm. Graham founded Washington & Lee. I have a copy of the Lyle Family Genealogy [The Lyoe Family by Oscar K. Lyle] & will review it for Ramsey references. My name is Kent S.
