Notes

34. Samuel HENDERSON (William26) was born about 1715 and died about 1782 in Augusta County, Virginia. He married Jane Henderson (HUTCHISON, THOMPSON, LEEPER) who was born about 800 in Augusta County, Virginia.

I am a descendant of Samuel through his son John Andrew. While most published genealogies list his parents as William and Margaret (Bruce), we know that William was son of Sir John Henderson of Fordell. My DNA has been tested and proves conclusively that this parentage is incorrect. Samuel was descended from Lowland Scot farmers from the area south of Glasgow. We believe his ancestors moved to Ulster in the Ulster Plantation. While the fathers name may well be William, he was not the William who was a son of Fordell. As Administrator of the Henderson DNA Project, I have confidence in this conclusion. We have a small group of Henderson men who are genuinely descended from Fordell, but we currently have 12 men out of over 400 for whom this is true. The father may indeed be named William based on the frequent use of this name in the family.
