Samuel Malacrida Guldin was born 8 November 1693 at Stettlen, Bern, Switzerland. He was the son of Rev. Samuel Koch Guldin and Mary Magdalena Malacrida. For many generations, the Guldin family used the mother's maiden name as a middle name for all of their children. Samuel M. emigrated to America with his parents on September 10 1710. He was a blacksmith and about 1718, he moved to the Oley Valley area which became Berks County. He was married 22 May 1722 to Elizabeth Hilsabeck. She was born about 1696, probably in Switzerland to John Hilsabeck. Her mother's name is unknown.

Samuel's will was dated 24 September 1773 and probated 25 October 1773 in Berks County, PA. He mentions his "estate in Bern, which is likewise ready to be remitted over in this part of the world".

Hans Yoder Sr., made his will June 17,1739. It was proven January 14,1742, at Philadelphia, and recorded in Will Book F. page 268. The document gives his name as "John Jodder of Philadelphia County, yeoman". He mentions two children, his sons John and Daniel, and Daniel's wife Barbara. He names his wife Anna Rosina and his son John executors. The witnesses to the will were Abraham Esshman, Abraham Levan, and Samuel Guldin. Hans Yoder signed his name in German: Hans Joder.

The Samuel Guldin who witnessed the will was probably the Samuel Guldin, Jr., born in Bern, Switzerland in 1693 while his father was clergyman at the Minster, the canton's principal church. The Reverend Samuel Guldin Sr. (1664-1745) was the first minister to come to Pennsylvania representing what became the German (rather than the Dutch) Reformed Church. He arrived on the Maria Hope in 1710. Like the lay preacher Matthias Baumann, Guldin had tangled with the state church over his own pietistic leanings. He lived in Roxbury but since his son Samuel moved to Oley in 1718, he may also have known Hans Yoder.

Samuel M. Guldin settled in Oley township, Berks Co., Pa., in 1718, and became the founder of the Guldin family there. He married May 22, 1722, Elizabeth Hilsaweek, and their children were: Samuel; Susanna; John; Mary Magdalena, who married Frederick Leinbach; Frederick; Daniel H.; Janna; Ester, and Clara Elizabeth. He was a farmer and blacksmith.
